Daniil Medvedev v Alexander Zverev Head to Head

There have been 13 previous meetings between these two players and Medvedev has a narrow 7-6 lead here. Interestingly, they have never faced off on clay before this.

Medvedev Wallops Sonego

Medvedev’s performance on clay has become bit of a joke – even to himself – but his showing in his second round match against Lorenzo Sonego was anything but that.

In fact, it could well send a warning signal to his clay court opponents that here’s a man on a mission looking to reinvent himself. And the start of that process was an excellent one as he ripped past Sonego 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 30 minutes.

The world number five, who has been in red-hot form all season, clinched his 30th win of the year to go with a mere three defeats without losing his serve even once.

Having gotten himself a first round bye, Medvedev got on the board rather early with a break in the very second game of the opening set. And while he missed two set-points off his opponent’s serve in the eighth game, he completed the last rites of the first set in the very next game.

In the second, Medvedev broke Sonego in the third and fifth game and rode through the rest of the games without too many difficulties to ease his way to round three. Now he faces a big challenge of a player who loves his time on clay.

Zverev in Control against Bautista-Agut

Despite being in bit of a strife since his return from injury earlier this season, Zverev has slowly been working his way into full rhythm. And his straight-set win over Roberto Bautista-Agut was probably another example of the German getting back to his best.

In a match lasting an hour and 48 minutes, Zverev found himself winning 6-4, 6-4 to make it to the third round. This followed a three-set win over Alexander Bublik in the opener.

Slamming 11 aces in the match, Zverev won 74% of his first serve points but he will need to mend his second serves which fell to a dismal 39% against Bautista-Agut. Even his opponent had a better second serve record in the match.

Still, a break to love in the fifth game was all that Zverev needed to win the opening set and while they traded breaks in the middle of the second set, the German got himself a decisive one in the seventh game.

He will enter this crucial third round match feeling good about himself.

Medvedev v Zverev Prediction and Tip

This is rather intriguing as Medvedev starts off a favourite in this one at 8/13 – who would have thought! Which makes Zverev’s 13/10 rather tempting to go for.
