The season so far hasn’t been that great for the World No. 8, given that just two months ago, she was on the No. 2 position. In WTA Sydney and the Australian Open, she lost in the early rounds, losing respectively to Petra Kvitova and Danielle Collins.

Those early defeats cost her the ranking as she slipped out of the top five. She had a resurgent run in WTA Doha when she reached the semifinal but once again, she stopped in her tracks – this time by Elise Mertens.

Despite her recent struggles with form, the reigning Wimbledon champion is certainly capable of going the distance here. Her career is marked by big wins over several top 10 players and by no means can be she be undermined.

Natalia Finds Her Rhythm

Vikhlyantseva, who is currently the World No. 112, reached the third round in Indian Wells after dispatching the likes of Priscilla Hon and Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets. She originally started as a qualifier and so far, has done a remarkable task of reaching this round.

With this, she has the 22-year-old Russian has also delivered the best performance of the year so far. The last time she reached the second round this year was in the Australian Open, where she lost to Timea Bacsinszky in the second round.

The 2017 Libema Open runner-up spent most of her previous season struggling to move past the early rounds.
