Two ATP Quarter Finals for O’Connell Already This Year

O’Connell has already had a number of performances to remember this season.

In Qatar in February, he reached the quarter-finals, beating the defending champion Roberto Batuista-Agut in the process, the third time in his career that he had beaten a top 30 ranked player.

And then, after suffering successive first round defeats in the Masters’ events in Indian Wells and Miami, he bounced back in Marrakech with another run to the quarter-finals, where one of his victims was Botic van de Zandschulp.

By the time that he plays Humbert, he may have a Challenger title under his belt, having just reached the semi-final of a clay court tournament in Croatia.

Clay Not Humbert’s Preferred Surface

Humbert has won three ATP titles, but none for two years, and none of them have been on clay, and, even in his Challenger days, it was not a surface on which he achieved much success.

He has reached a Challenger final this year, beaten on the hard courts of Pau at the start of March.

From there he travelled to Indian Wells, where he reached the third round, notching up an impressive win over Denis Shapovalov in the process, before losing to Andrey Rublev.

He then reached the second round in Miami.

The Frenchman played his first clay court tournament of the year In Monte Carlo, where he battled through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw.

There he met the Italian Lorenzo Sonego, and, although he won the first set, could not hold on to his advantage and he was eventually beaten.

O’Connell v Humbert Prediction and Tip

Although there is very little to choose between them in terms of world ranking, the surface would appear to favour the Australian, especially given his recent performances in Morocco.
