Juan Pablo Varillas v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

Varillas won their only tour-level meeting in Rio earlier this year.

They met once at a lower level event in Rome in 2021, with Gaston winning that match.

Varillas Going Strong on Clay

Clay court specialist Juan Pablo Varillas is 11-7 across levels on the surface this year.

The Peruvian had reached the semifinals of the Buenos Aires Open by beating Dominic Thiem and Lorenzo Musetti en route, before falling to Cameron Norrie in the final four clash.

The 27-year-old recently went on to reach his 10th challenger final in San Remo Challenger but he couldn’t add to his previous five Challenger titles going down to Luca Van Assche in the title clash.

Varillas, who is 13-10 overall this year, is 4-6 on the tour.

He had made his top 100 debut last year, and had touch a career-high ranking of no. 76 on March 6th this year. Currently ranked no. 91, Varillas will look to climb back the rankings with a decent showing in Banja Luka.

Gaston Looking to Climb Back the Rankings

Hugo Gaston is 1-3 in the main draw of the tour level. But he has played plenty of matches at the Challenger level, particularly on clay.

Gaston has a 13-10 season record across levels and he is 11-8 on clay. The Frenchman’s best this season saw him reach the final of Viña del Mar Challenger in Chile, where he finished runner-up to Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild.

In his most recent performances, the 22-year-old left-hander lost in the second round in Marrakech and was beaten in the first qualifying round in Monte-Carlo.

Gaston, who had fallen out of the top 100 in November last year, had briefly climbed back into the top 100 to no. 98 in March, only to fall out of top 100 once again this month.

The world no. 105 tends to do well on clay and has an overall record of 12-11 on clay at the tour level.

Varillas v Gaston Prediction and Tip

Varillas won the most recent battle between the two in the first round in Rio. He has been in pretty good form on clay and has already played in a final this month. Expect Gaston to put a strong challenge but the Peruvian is expected to edge through.
