Maria Sakkari v Karolina Pliskova Head to Head

The tally is evenly tied at 3-3; they have met twice already in 2023, and both players got a win each. They last met in Indian Wells, where Sakkari prevailed in three sets.

Sakkari Enjoying a Good Season

World No. 9 Maria Sakkari has had a good start to the year and hopes to carry forward that same zest on clay. She is set to start in Stuttgart with a record of 15-7.

The Greek has reached three semifinals already in 2023 – WTA Linz, WTA Doha, and the Indian Wells Open. She fell short of reaching the title match, losing respectively to Petra Martic, Jessica Pegula, and Aryna Sabalenka.

In the process, Sakkari did beat a few big names like Caroline Garcia, Pliskova, Donna Vekic, and Petra Kvitova.

Most recently, she competed in Miami, where she was handed a three-set loss by Bianca Andreescu in round one.

Maria finds herself hunting for titles; her last one (which is also her only title) came in 2019 in Morocco. In 2022, she made it to four finals – including the Indian Wells Open and Guadalajara Open but had to settle for the runner-up silverware.

Pliskova Staging a Comeback

After ending last season early due to injury, former #1 Karolina Pliskova is working hard to reach her former self. She has already bagged 16 wins while losing 7 in 2023.

Now ranked World No. 17, the 31-year-old Czech is set to start the clay swing – supported by her momentum from quarterfinal feats in the Australian Open and WTA Dubai. In the Sunshine doubles, Pliskova made it as far as the mid-rounds.

Compared to Sakkari, Karolina has a far superior pedigree with 32 WTA career finals – including 2 majors and 7 WTA 1000 events.

She is also better suited for clay than her Greek adversary, having won the Stuttgart Open in 2018 and reaching the final at the Italian Open thrice.

It will come down to fitness for Pliskova, seeing that she still has her trysts with form woes.

Sakkari v Pliskova Prediction and Tip

Expect an evenly-matched fixture with many games in the offing. Pliskova has a good chance of winning here, but then again, so does Sakkari. Of the two, the Czech is a superior player for us owing to her experience.
