Denis Shapovalov v Marin Cilic Head to Head

The two men have met twice before, with Cilic the winner on both occasions. Their first meeting came on indoor clay in the Davis Cup last year, followed, a few months later, with a fourth round meeting at the Miami Masters.

Encouraging Second Round Display will Boost Shapovalov Confidence

With a difficult start to the year behind him coming into Indian Wells, Shapovalov would not have been in the best of frames of mind going into Monday’s meeting against local favourite, Steve Johnson.

However, he will take heart from how he served against the American, hitting eight aces and winning 91% of his points on his first service. He also successfully defended break points in two out of his last three service games, as he clinched the match 6-3, 6-4.

He knows he will need to achieve a similar level of consistency against Cilic if he has to have any chance given what has happened in the lead-up to the tournament. The Canadian hasn’t won more than two successive matches this season and there have been first round losses at the Auckland Open earlier and Marseille Open in what was the last tournament he played before entering this one.

Is Cilic a Potential Outside Threat for the Title?

Cilic began the tournament ranked outside the world’s top ten for the first time since October 2016. However, he began confidently enough, disposing of Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in an hour and 33 minutes, winning 6-3, 6-4. Again, his serve was in good working order, winning 77% of first serve points, to his opponent’s 55%.

He was less proficient in terms of break points, failing to convert seven opportunities in the first set alone, but he got the job done in the end to progress.

His best ever showing at Indian Wells came in 2016 when he reached the quarter-finals, but he will be hopeful of matching that this year, and perhaps going even further. Interestingly, he has featured in just two tournaments before this one this season, losing in the fourth round at the Australian Open and an opener at Dubai. Will need a big turnaround going into the rest of this tournament.

Shapovalov v Cilic Predictions & Tips

Cilic starts as favourite with the bookmakers at 8/15, whilst Shapovalov is priced at 7/4 (bet365). Their head-to-head record and diffference in world rankings favour the Croat, but much may depend on which of the two men serve better on the day. The match may be a close encounter, but Cilic may just edge it.

Tip: Cilic to win: 8/15 (bet365)
