Jabeur Rallies Past Ostapenko

Last year’s quarterfinalist Ons Jabeur is back into the last eight of the Stuttgart Open. The third seed came back from a set down to beat Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in the second round on Thursday.

Jabeur broke Ostapenko in the very first game of the match, but the world no. 22 then won six games in a row to take the opening set. The world no. 4 was broken early in the second set and then she faced defeat as the Latvian served for the match at 4-5 in the second. But Jabeur refused to go out and broke Ostapenko to stay alive in the contest. She won three games in a row to force the deciding set and then got the only break of the set in the sixth game to clinch the match 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

With the win Jabeur improved to 6-0 on clay this year. She won the Charleston Open title by defeating Belinda Bencic in the final earlier this month.

The third seed will be hoping to reach a third semifinal of the season. In addition to her title success in Charleston, she also made it to the last four in Adelaide.

Haddad Maia Advances as Rybakina Withdraws

Beatriz Haddad Maia reached the quarterfinal in Stuttgart for the first time following Elena Rybakina’s retirement in the second round on Thursday.

The world no. 14 allowed the Wimbledon champion to win just one game in the first set, while she broke her thrice to take the opening set 6-1. Rybakina needed a medical timeout after the first set. She continued playing in the second set, but couldn’t last the entire contest, retiring with a low back injury while she trailed 1-6, 1-3.

This is the fourth time that the Brazilian has reached the quarterfinal this year. She was a semifinalist in Abu Dhabi and fell in the quarterfinal in Adelaide-2 and Doha.

The 26-year-old lefty had also advanced from the first round due to a walkover. She was leading Martina Trevisan 7-5, 1-1 when the Italian withdrew from the contest.

Jabeur v Haddad Maia Prediction and Tip

Jabeur is the superior player in this contest. The Tunisian is also in tremendous form at the moment and will look to keep her unbeaten clay streak going on Thursday.
