Krejcikova Has No Worries against Wang

Krejcikova was 1/5 to win her third round match against Xiyu Wang and the former French Open winner did not waste a lot of time in getting past her Chinese opponent.

In a match that lasted an hour and 28 minutes, Krejcikova registered a 6-4, 6-1 win over Wang and marched into the round of 16 of the Madrid Open for the first time in her career.

Having needed a three-setter against Danka Kovinic in her previous round victory, Krejcikova was off to a rollicking start against Wang as she broke her twice in a row to take a 5-2 lead. The Czech then lost her serve once before serving out the set in the next game.

It was no different in the second set. In fact, this time around Krejcikova broke Wang three times to help herself to a 5-0 lead. Again, there was a loss of serve in the sixth game but Krejcikova quickly recovered for her fourth break of serve of the set to seal the win.

Can she now march on further and become a serious title contender?

Martic Stretched by Kalinskaya

Anna Kalinskaya is a much-improved player these days, so much so that despite being ranked lower than the former world number 14 Martic, she had gone into their third round match as a favourite.

One of the reasons for that could also be down to Kalinskaya’s performance in the previous round where she had stunned the Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

Martic also did not have it easy but it seemed like her slightly higher experience at playing at the highest level helped her seal the two hours and five minutes long encounter.

In a cagey encounter that saw both players lose their serve once apiece in the first two sets, it was Martic’s ability to hold her nerve – and serve – that saw her carve out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Kalinskaya.

This was just her second win of the season on clay. Martic will hope to put up a fight against Krejcikova here.
