Iga Swiatek v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head

Swiatek leads the rivalry 5-2. Both of Sabalenka’s win came in the WTA Finals and both of them were three set affairs. Four of Swiatek’s five wins over the Belarusian have come in straight sets.

Their only meeting in 2023, saw Swiatek beat Sabalenka in straight sets in the Stuttgart Open final. The Pole had also beaten the same opponent in the Stuttgart final in 2022.

World no. 1 Iga Swiatek extended her dominance over Veronika Kudermetova to 4-0 with a yet another crushing win over the Russian in the semifinal of the Madrid Open on Thursday.

The win also extended the Pole’s unbeaten run on clay to 9-0 in 2023. The 21-year-old, who defended her Stuttgart Open title in her first clay court tournament of the season, has been in incredible form in Madrid.

She has been particularly dominant in her last two matches, trouncing Petra Martic 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinal and then breezing past Kudermetova with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the semifinal.

Swiatek saved all five of the break points that she faced and converted 5 of 12 to dump out the world no. 13 in just an hour and 20 minutes.

It was her fourth straight sets win in five matches in Madrid this year. The only time she was stretched to three sets, it was against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round 16. Swiatek had begun her campaign with back-to-back straight set victories over Julia Grabher and Bernarda Pera respectively.

A 13-time winner on the tour, Swiatek will be featuring in the 17th final of her career. It will be her fourth final of the season. While she won the titles in Doha and Stuttgart, she finished runner-up in Dubai. Can she win her third title of the year on Saturday?

Sabalenka Ousts Sakkari

2021 champion Aryna Sabalenka is back in the final of the 2023 edition of the Madrid Open. It is only the second time in her five attempts that Sabalenka has gone past the first round in the Spanish capital and on Saturday she will be aiming to join Petra Kvitova, Serena Williams and Simona Halep as the fourth woman with multiple Madrid Open titles.

Sabalenka, who won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this year, is 28-4 in 2023 and 8-1 on clay. The only defeat she suffered on clay was agains Swiatek in the Stuttgart final. Sabalenka will be hoping to avenge that defeat in the final as the Belarusian aims to win her third title of the season in what will be her fifth final.

In addition to the Melbourne major, Sabalenka also won in Adelaide. She, however fell short of the title in Indian Wells and Stuttgart.

A 12-time champion from 22 finals, Sabalenka began her 2023 Madrid challenge with straight set wins over Sorana Cirstia, Camila Osorio and Mirra Andreeva in the first three rounds. She was however given a tough fight in the quarterfinal, having to score a come-from-behind win over Mayar Sherif.

In the semifinal on Thursday, Sabalenka needed just an hour and 26 minutes to send the world no. 9 packing.

Sabalenka saved 5 of 6 break points and converted 4 of 10 to win the match 6-4, 6-1.

Swiatek is in incredible form, she has also dominated the rivalry against Sabalenka and most of her wins over the Belarusian have been straightforward. So the Pole will be the favourite to capture the Madrid crown.
