Adrian Mannarino v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 34 year old Frenchman, and the Brazilian, who is six years younger.

Mannarino’s Dismal Rome Record

Mannarino has a terrible record in Rome. Although he first entered the main draw in 2011, he has never been beyond the first round in this tournament.

In fact, the same could be said of most clay court events. It is his least preferred surface, and the one on which he has achieved his least success. All eleven of his senior finals have either been on hard courts or grass.

And there have been few indications this year that his luck may be about to change.

He failed to get beyond the first round of qualifying in Monte Carlo, and. although he did win his first round match in a Challenger event in Portugal, it was against an opponent ranked 241 places below him in the world.

Another first round defeat in Madrid followed, and then yet another, in the Challenger tournament in Aix-en-Provence which Andy Murray subsequently won.

Monteiro Playing on His Favourite Surface

By contrast, his opponent Monteiro was brought up on clay, and he has reached 13 Challenger finals on the surface, winning eight of them, the most recent on Italian soil in Genoa last September.

Not that the Brazilian number one has been in the best of form this year.

He normally expects to do well during the South American swing, but the best that he could manage this time round was a third round appearance in Santiago.

Monteiro skipped Monte Carlo, but his first appearance in Europe saw him slip to a first round defeat in Munich, beaten in three sets by the German Yannick Hanfmann.

He did, though, win his first match in Madrid, beating the Croat Borna Gojo, before Karen Khachanov ended his progress.

However, his stay in Cagliari was a short one, beaten in the first round of the Challenger tournament there.

This will be only his second appearance in Rome, and his first since 2017.

Mannarino v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Whilst their comparative world rankings would suggest that Mannarino should start the favourite, that fails to take into account his poor record in this event, and on clay generally. The surface is far more to the liking of the Brazilian, who can be confident of reaching the second round here for the first time in his career.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Monteiro to win: 5/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 25.5 games in the match: 6/5
