Grigor Dimitrov v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

It’s an old rivalry that dates back to 2011 and they have played 12 times over the years with Wawrinka leading 7-5.

However, their last meeting was in Acapulco in 2020, which was won by Dimitrov.

On clay, both have won twice each.

Dimitrov Searching for Consistency

World no. 33 Grigor Dimitrov will begin his Rome Masters campaign on Friday. The Bulgarian brings an 11-8 season record into the tournament.

Dimitrov’s best this season saw him reach the semifinals in Rotterdam, other than that he has struggled to win consecutive matches and make deep runs this year. Australian Open was the only other tournament where he won two matches in a row, falling in the third round to Novak Djokovic.

His recent form has been dodgy too as he won his first matches in Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid but failed to go past the second opponent in Monte-Carlo and Madrid and withdrew due to an illness in Barcelona.

So overall, Dimitrov has a 3-2 record on clay this year, which the eight-time tour-level champion will like to improve during his 11th appearance in Rome.

Dimitrov’s best at the Italian Open was a semifinal finish in 2014 and he was also a quarterfinalist in 2020.

Wawrinka Breezes Past Ivashka

Former world no. 3 Stan Wawrinka needed just an hour and 18 minutes to dispatch Ilya Ivashka in the opening round of the Rome Masters.

Dominating the match from the start, the world no. 84 dropped just four points of his serve in the first set and broke the Belarusian twice to take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, the Swiss faced some resistance from the world no. 73, but eventually he got the decisive break in the 10th game of the set to clinch the contest 6-2, 6-4.

Wawrinka improved his season record to 12-9. He had looked strong during back-to-back indoor quarterfinal appearances in Rotterdam and Marseille and then a round of 16 finish in Indian Wells.

But on clay, the 16-time ATP champion has been inconsistent this season and a 3-3 record is a testament to that. He will be relieved to have begun with a win. Now can the 2008 Italian Open finalist add another win in Rome on Friday?

Dimitrov v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a very close affair between the old rivals. Both have lacked the consistency recently but have shown the desire to fight. Wawrinka will be confident after the convincing win in the first round. Can he build on that start? Three sets seem imminent in this contest and Wawrinka, who has already had the feel of the conditions in the first round, may edge past the seeded Bulgarian.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Wawrinka to win: 1/1
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
