Leylah Fernandez v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their two meetings. While Fernandez won in the semifinal of the Monterrey Open in 2021, Sorribes Tormo won their most recent meeting in the semifinal of an ITF event in Spain on Saturday.

Fernandez Has Struggled this Season

After the highs of the last two years, it has been a disappointing season for Leylah Fernandez so far. The Canadian comes into the tournament with a 15-11 overall record this season, but she is 7-8 at the tour level.

The lefty reached the quarterfinal of her season opener in Auckland, but since then things have been very tough for her. Fernandez did win a match at the Australian Open and also in Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston, but she couldn’t win consecutive matches in any of those tournaments.

Most recently, she participated in the ITF Madrid 19 tournament on clay and went on to reach the semifinals of the tournament only to fall to Sorribes Tormo — her first round opponent in Rabat.

A quarterfinalist at the French Open last year, Fernandez will be hoping to get into a good rhythm before this year’s clay court major.

Can she get a quick revenge over the Spaniard in Rabat?

Sorribes Tormo In Good Form

As we were writing the preview, Sara Sorribes Tormo was preparing to play her 20th ITF final.

The Spaniard, who has won 10 titles at the ITF circuit (9 on clay), had defeated Leylah Fernandez in straight sets of the ITF Madrid 19 semifinal on Saturday.

Overall, the world no. 155 has a 10-4 record this year, having only played in lower level tournaments and mostly on clay.

Plagued by injuries in recent times, the 26-year-old Spaniard did not feature in the hard court tournaments in the first quarter this year as a result of which she fell out of the top 100.

She returned to action on clay in Bogota, where she made it to the quarterfinals and then she made it to the final four at the ITF Oeiras before reaching the final in ITF Spain 19, scheduled to take place on Sunday.

In Rabat, she will be playing for the fourth time, she has reached the round of 16 twice and was ousted in the first round last year.

Fernandez v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

Although Fernandez lost in the ITF semifinal on Saturday, she will be hoping to get a quick revenge against the Spaniard. Sorribes Tormo has played a lot this week and will be drained after the final on Sunday and that might be a factor coming into play in the first round in Rabat. Expect Fernandez to win this contest and advance.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fernandez to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
