There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Ramos-Vinolas has every single time. All three matches came on clay and in the round of 16 of those tournaments, with Ramos Vinolas not dropping a set.

With Ramos Vinolas struggling to make the results go his way at the highest level, he was forced to participate in the Bordeaux Challenger which ran parallel to the second week of the Rome Masters.
The veteran Ramos Vinolas, who loves his time on clay and had made a solid start to the season on that surface with a semifinal appearance at the Cordoba Open and quarterfinals in Rio, has been unable to make it count in more recent times.
He was sent packing from the first round of the Santiago Open, and by the time he had overcome Ilya Ivashka in the first round of the Madrid Masters, the Spaniard had lost five successive matches on clay.
An opening round win in Rome would have brought some relief but another second round defeat followed and while he did make the quarterfinals in Bordeaux, Ramos Vinolas will know he has a lot to do get things back on track before the French Open.

Varillas had had his own struggles for the season. Again, like Ramos-Vinolas, Varillas is a clay courter and proved his strength on this surface by making it to the semifinal of the Argentina Open after starting out as a qualifier.
More recently he featured in San Remo Challenger, also on clay, and finished a runner-up to Luca Van Assche in that tournament.
Other than those results, however, Varillas has had his issues. He failed to qualify for the Monte-Carlo Masters, and while he made the second round in Banja Luka, he went on to lose four matches in a row after that.
That includes a first round defeat in the Turin Challenger last week.
