Grabher Moves Past Bonaventure

Julia Grabher of Austria began her campaign in Morocco with a three-set slogfest against Ysaline Bonaventure. Losing the first set, the Austrian staged a comeback to win the match 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2, in a little under two and a half hours.

With this win, Grabher is now 12-18 for the season, although she is having herself a better time on clay. It is not too surprising, given that in the past, she has always fared well on this turf. Case in point, last year, she was 43-20 and the year before, 20-12.

Most recently, the 26-year-old reached the third round in Rome, beating Jil Teichmann and Nuria Brancaccio in the opening matches. That feat also propelled her to a career-best ranking of #74. In the same way, Grabher also featured in the third round of WTA 500 Charleston.

Add to this mix her 22 ITF Finals on clay and a Challenger trophy from the Bari Open, and it is easy to see why she can do well in a relatively easier pool in Rabat.

Buyukakcay Upsets Fruhvirtova

Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay is off to a good start in the 2023 Morocco Open, beating the seventh seed Linda Fruhvirtova 7-5, 6-4. It was quite a feat for the current #263 to beat the emerging Czech prodigy, needing well over two hours to pull this straight-set upset.

The 33-year-old was put to the test, no doubt, by the teenager, but ultimately, experience prevailed.

The question now is if she can carry forward the same momentum against Julia. It will be difficult, considering the mixed season she has had so far.

At the moment, Buyukakcay is 12-11 and has competed only in ITF tournaments. In fact, this is her first WTA Tour event of the season – so understandably, she will have to up her game if she wants to beat the circuit regulars.

Among Cagla’s highlights of the season are a couple of quarterfinal stints in Thai ITF events. Most recently, she has had to settle for early exits.

Grabher v Buyukakcay Prediction and Tip

Grabher is the odds-on favourite, but it may not be a walk in the park for her. Cagla is experienced and can test the Austrian, but it may be difficult for her to translate that effort into a win.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Grabher to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
