Etcheverry Benefits from Draper Injury

Jack Draper had come into the French Open with some sort of a fitness cloud hanging over his head after missing a couple of months of tennis because of an abdominal strain earlier this year.

He was laid low by a shoulder injury in the opening round of the French Open as Etcheverry gained a second round berth following his retirement.

Etcheverry, who had come into the match as an 8/11 favourite, gained an early break of serve in the opener but when he lost his serve in the seventh game, it looked like things could go either way. He frittered away two break-points in the eighth game before Etcheverry broke in the crucial 10th game to clinch the opening set.

In the second, Etcheverry had only just held on to his serve in the first game when a struggling Draper, who was forced to serve underarm, threw in the towel with his shoulder problem.

This gave Etcheverry a maiden win at the French Open and the Argentine will now hope to double that count.

Struggling de Minaur Goes Past Ivashka

It’s not been his best time on clay this year and while de Minaur had gone into his opening round match against Ilya Ivashka as a whopping 3/10 favourite, there was another glimpse of the Aussie struggling to take advantage of an off-colour opponent.

That’s because de Minaur himself has been in the same boat on clay, having entered the match with a 3-4 win-loss record on clay.

The world number 19 was forced to be on court for two hours and 47 minutes by Ivashka before he came through 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in their opener. A whopping 49 unforced errors off the de Minaur racquet made it that much more difficult for him.

This follows defeats after opening wins at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Masters and an opening loss in Rome. Can he turn things around here?
