Coric Holds Off Coria in Four

Building on a solid clay court form this season, No. 15 seed Borna Coric began his French Open campaign with a four-set win over Federico Coria.

Coric came back from a break down twice in the opening set before clinching set in the tiebreak. The second set, too, saw both the players trade two breaks each before the Argentine tied the match at one-set apiece.

The Croatian, ranked no. 16th in the world, saved four break points in the third set and got the solitary break to lead 2-1. He looked in complete control in the final set, building a 5-1 lead, but just when it seemed he was cruising, Coria put up a strong fight. He saved four match points on his serve to make it 2-5 and then broke serve immediately to make it 3-5 and make things interestingly.

Coric however put up a solid service performance in the final game to close the four hour and nine minute contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3.

Coric hit 66 winners in the match, 40 more than Coria, but he also made 72 unforced errors to the Argentine’s 65.

Coric, who was a semifinalist in Madrid and a quarterfinalist in Rome, improved to 8-4 on clay. He didn’t have a great run on hard courts and so he is 14-11 overall this season.

The Croatian has reached the third round in Roland Garros on four of his past seven appearances, and that remains his best showing in the clay court major. Can he reach the round of 32 a fifth time?

Cachin Battles Past Thiem in Five

For the second straight year Pedro Cachin is in the second round of the French Open.

The world no. 64 knocked out two-time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem in a five-set contest on Monday. It is the third year in a row when the Austrian has lost in the opening round at Roland Garros.

The 28-year-old Argentine had almost thrown away a two-sets-to-love lead as Thiem clawed his way back into the contest to force the decider. In fact, Cachin could have closed out the match in the third set itself when he served for the match at 6-5 in the third. But a determined Thiem kept his chances alive by breaking back and taking the set in the tiebreak. He also took the fourth set as the momentum shifted towards the Austrian.

But just when it seemed the balance had shifted towards Thiem, Cachin found form again and he raced to victory in the final set.

Cachin saved 6 of 12 break points in the match and converted 10 of 17 to win the three hour and 49 minute contest 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 4-6, 6-2.

Cachin improved his season record to 9-15 at the tour level and he os 17-18 overall. On clay, he is 16-12 across levels this season.

Can the Argentine, who made a round of 16 debut at an ATP 1000 tournament in Madrid this year, reach the third round of the French Open?

Coric v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Coric is in excellent form at the moment. He has more experience at this level and is the superior player. Expect the Croatian to oust the Argentine. However, this match could go the distance.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Coric to win: 2/5
