It wasn’t going Fognini’s way all season. In fact, it’s been a while since Fognini has won successive matches in two successive tournaments and that was why most experts had written the Italian off.
Fognini, however, had recently claimed he still had some tennis left in him and it seemed like he wanted to say that it was a matter of getting some winning rhythm under his belt. That is what seems to have happened this month.
Now make no mistake, Fognini is still some way off from his personal best but for him to reach the third round at the Italian Masters with wins over Andy Murray and Miomir Kecmanovic would have been a big boost.
So much so he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round here and has now sent Jason Kubler packing in the second. Making these two wins extra-special is the fact that he’s won them both in straight sets and will now be gunning for his first time in a Grand Slam fourth round since the 2021 Australian Open.

Qualifier Ofner Shocks Korda
Sebastian Korda hasn’t had a lot of tennis under his belt in recent times but he was still an 11/20 favourite coming into his second round match.
Two hours and 38 minutes, Ofner had breezed past Korda in straight sets to enter the third round of a Grand Slam for only the second time in his career.
In fact in 20 previous Grand Slam appearances, Ofner has made the main draw just twice which includes a third round appearance at Wimbledon and a first round ouster here at Roland-Garros last year.
Which is why a straight-set win over Maxime Cressy in the first round would have been special enough but to then overcome Korda 6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-4 makes it so much better.
He was broken three times, all of which came in a second set but he didn’t allow Korda to get away and then had no trouble winning the following tie-breaker either. Ofner will now reckon he has a good chance against Fognini.

Not much to choose between the two to be honest but Fognini’s experience and rhythm could prove a bit crucial here. Fognini will be our pick to win in four sets.
