Muchova Takes Down Begu

Karolina Muchova marched into the fourth round of the French Open for the first time in her career with a convincing straight sets win over the 27th seed Irina-Camelia Begu.

Having lost in the third rounds over the last two years, the Czech made sure that she crossed the hurdle this year as she dispatched the Romanian in an hour and 34 minutes.

Muchova got the solitary break of the first set and had built a 4-1 lead with a double break in the second. Begu did get a break in the sixth game of the second set, but Muchova broke a third time to restore a two brek advantage and then served out the match for a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

It was the easiest win so far for the Czech in the tournament. She had upset the eighth seed Maria Sakkari 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the first round and then edged past Nadoa Podorsoka 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 in the second round.

Muchova will now be eyeing her fourth quarterfinal of the season, having reached that far in Auckland, Dubai and Indian Wells.

In case she does makes it that far, then it will be her fourth quarterfinal at a Grand Slam. The 26-year-old was a semifinalist at the Australian Open in 2021 and was a quarterfinalist twice at Wimbledon.

Avanesyan Rebounds to Beat Tauson

Elina Avanesyan became the first lucky loser since 1988 to reach the round of 16 at the French Open.

The world no. 134, who had lost her third qualifying round match to Kayla Day in three sets, would have expected to watch the clay court major on TV; but she got lucky and found a place in the main draw and has not looked back since.

Making her debut at the French Open this year, the 20-year-old upset 12th seed Belinda Bencic 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the first round. She followed that up with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over France’s Leolia Jeanjean on Wednesday and then kept the momentum going in the third round against Clara Tauson, rallying from a set down to beat the Dane in three-set contest on Friday.

In a two hour and 22 minutes contest Avanesyan converted 8 of 14 break points and saved 5 of 11 to beat the Dane 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.

With the win, Avanesyan is now 21-12 on clay across levels this year. Can she keep her fairytale going with another win on Sunday?.

Muchova v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip

Muchova is an experienced campaigner. She has grown in confidence as the tournament has progressed and her past Grand Slam experience will also be a plus for her against the inexperienced Russian. Expect Avanesyan to put up a challenge but the Czech should advance to the last eight stage.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Muchova to win: 1/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
