Casper Ruud v Holger Rune Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings between these two players, all of which have come on clay. And rather interestingly, Ruud’s won four of them including one at this very stage of the previous season’s French Open.

Rune’s only win came in Rome earlier this year.

Ruud Thwarts Jarry

Despite an extremely fighting display from Nicolas Jarry, Ruud held his own in the fourth round of the French Open and registered a straight-set win.

A finalist here last year, Ruud was on court for three hours and 22 minutes – probably the longest straight-set win of the tournament – to clinch a 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-5 victory.

There were a total of 17 break-points against Ruud but he saved all but three of them. In turn he broke his opponent five times, and served just that much better to find a way past his defence.

What was interesting to see is it was Jarry who tried to call the shots through most part of the match. He hit a whopping 56 winners and had 67 unforced errors against him even as Ruud’s corresponding numbers were 30 and 32 respectively.

Ruud now faces his first big challenge of the tournament having earlier defeated players ranked 155th, 129th, 71st and 35th in the world.

Rune Scrapes Past Cerundolo

Francisco Cerundolo was having the time of his life in this tournament and for a moment it looked like he might actually notch up one of the biggest wins of his career so far.

Facing Rune, he managed to take their fourth round encounter into the final set tie-breaker and take a 5-3 and then a 7-6 lead there. Rune, however, is made of sterner stuff and won the next four points in a row to clinch his place in the last eight stage of the tournament.

Rune won 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7) in a match that lasted a tick under four hours.

What was rather fascinating to watch was Rune’s serve was broken seven times after his opponent got 20 opportunities to do while he himself got the better of Cerundolo’s serve a mere four times.

Add the winner and unforced errors count to this and it looks almost bizarre that Rune won – he had lesser number of winners and more unforced errors than Cerundolo!

And that’s where Rune, who is 16-3 on clay this season, has been such a difficult player to get past – his grit and never-say-die attitude. And that is also why he will be such a threat to the world number four.

Ruud v Rune Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, Ruud had been in such poor form before this tournament that it was hard to imagine him making it this far but now that he has, he starts off a 4/5 favourite to win this against Rune. Backing Rune to fight tooth and nail though and it’s that very fight which could help him come through here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Both players to win a set – Yes: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Rune to win: 1/1
