Alexander Zverev v Casper Ruud Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two and Zverev leads 2-1 on head to head. None of those came on clay though.

Zverev Pushed to Four Sets by Etcheverry

A year ago, Zverev was forced to pull out of his semifinal match at the French Open after suffering an on-court injury in his match against Rafael Nadal. The German did not play the rest of the season and then made a comeback earlier this year with modest results.

Only in one tournament in 2023 since his return did Zverev win three successive matches – it came in Dubai – and on clay, he struggled to make it past the round of 16 at Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome Masters.

Now back at the site of that very injury, Zverev has won five in a row to make it back to the semifinals again. It has been a performance worthy of praise, given the tricky nature of his opponents so far.

Having been stretched to four sets to by Frances Tiafoe in the third round, Zverev needed another four sets against Tomas Etcheverry but a bit of a fight was to be expected. Etcheverry is a clay-court star in the making and he did his bit by keeping his opponent on court for nearly three and a half hours.

In the end, however, Zverev bossed the contest, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to make the semifinal. Can he now finish off the work left unfinished last season?

Ruud Also Turning Things Around at the French Open

After a highly forgettable start to the season which saw Ruud blame his pre-season preparation, the world number four would have felt a lot better coming into the Euro clay court swing.

He did manage a victory at the Estoril Open early in April but has been quite lacklustrous ever since.

A semifinal appearance at the Rome Masters was a bit of a relief but a loss to Holger Rune in that match meant that going up against the same opponent in the quarterfinal of this French Open had him start off with a bit of a question-mark against him.

Two hours and 47 minutes later, Ruud had carved out a 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Rune and marched into his second semifinal at the French Open in a row.

Ruud was broken just once in the entire contest, even as he got the better of his opponent’s serve five times. And while he endured 48 winners from Rune, it was the 47 unforced errors from his Danish opponent that helped too. Especially on his own serve.

Zverev could be a rather difficult proposition but Ruud looks like he has a good momentum going.

Zverev v Ruud Prediction and Tip

While Zverev is a bookmakers’ favourite and we also reckon he will start as one, this will be anything but a straightforward victory for him.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Zverev to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 39.5 games in the match: 5/6
