Giorgi Retired at the French Open

Camila Giorgi arrives in Nottingham hoping whatever afflicted her in Paris will have gone away as she starts her grass-court swing.

Giorgi was outplayed by Jessica Pegula at the French Open, losing the first set 6-2, but quickly called it quits with no hint of injury.

It’s very rare to see Giorgi throw in the towel, but with multiple cases of reported food poisoning and viral illness sweeping through the locker room in Paris, there was speculation that could have been Giorgi’s reasoning for her recent retirement.

Giorgi is now 14-10 this season but will push for a seeding spot at Wimbledon, with the Italian power hitter occupying 37th spot in the rankings.

Giorgi has a history on grass. She won her first title on the lawns at the Rosmalen Championships in 2015. Last year, she reached the semifinal in Eastbourne pointing that she still has a penchant for doing well on the surface.

Brengle Suffers Ignominious Loss in Surbiton

Unlike Giorgi, Madison Brengle quickly flew to the UK after her early exit at the French Open. The American jetted to Surbiton at the 100K ITF tournament.

She drew 16-year-old qualifier Isabelle Lacy of Great Britain in the first round. This was expected to be a straightforward opener for the experienced Brengle but was on the wrong end of a 6-7 7-5 1-6 loss to the upstart who scored the biggest win of her life.

Despite playing over 200 matches on the WTA Tour, last week’s defeat in Surbiton is one of Brengle’s low points and it came at a time when Brengle was looking to keep her top-100 ranking intact.

As a result of it, she’s now dropped from 95th to 113 in the live rankings, putting her Wimbledon participation at risk.

Brengle will likely need to look for points in the WTA’s lower tiers in the upcoming weeks, but a win against Giorgi in Nottingham could restore a semblance of confidence.

Giorgi v Brengle Prediction and Tip

Losing to a 16-year-old in an ITF tournament is certainly not what Brengle envisaged to start her grass-court swing. Assuming Giorgi has recovered from whatever afflicted her in Paris, we fancy the Italian to put up a dominant showing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Giorgi to win: 2/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 8/13
