Can Cornet Salvage Season?

The first half of the season was hardly Alize Cornet’s best, with the Frenchwoman losing 13 of her 20 matches.

Cornet failed to win a single match in the first three months of the season. She was made to wait until this year’s clay swing to pick up that elusive win in Charleston in early April, beating Fiona Crawley in straight sets.

The 33-year-old went on to rack up four more wins on red clay, including a quarterfinal run to the WTA 125K in Paris.

Incidentally, that was the scene of her last win too, with Cornet going on a three-match losing streak since. At the French Open, she was beaten by Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the first round.

Cornet will look to bounce back on the grass, a surface she’s had decent success in the past in getting confidence-boosting wins. Will she do so in Nottingham in her debut?

Agony for Swan in Surbiton

Katie Swan came close to winning the biggest title of her career at the weekend in Surbiton but lost the W100 ITF final to veteran Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

Swan led by a set and a break, and despite losing the second set 6-4, she was quickly in the lead again early in the third set with a break. But even with a full crowd behind her, she came up short to Wickmayer’s veteran knowhow who won the final-set tiebreak in dominant fashion, 7-1.

Considering that Swan was also looking to become the British No. 1, with nothing but a title win confirming that status, she won’t eclipse Emma Raducanu, but it will be Katie Boulter who will wrestle that No.1 ranking next week.

Swan has no time to dwell on that near miss in Surbiton, with the prize and stakes being much higher this week in Nottingham.

Tuesday will be her third appearance at the WTA 250 event. She’s lost in the first round in each of the last two editions she’s played including the first time here back in 2018 as a 19-year-old qualifier.

Cornet v Swan Prediction and Tip

Swan endured heartbreak in Surbiton, but she’ll be happy with the level she showed, recording a massive win over last year’s Wimbledon semifinalist Tatjana Maria and even having the upper hand in the final. Cornet has played poorly for most of this season which makes her tough to back at current odds.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Swan to win a set – Yes: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Swan to win: 5/6
