Jule Niemeier v Heather Watson Head to Head

Jule Niemeier and Heather Watson have played twice before in the 2022 season, with the head-to-head locked at 1-1. Watson won in Monterrey in three sets before Niemeier exacted revenge at Wimbledon.

Niemeier Enters Crucial Phase

Jule Niemeier is a lowly 5-14 for the season. And if you dig down her recent matches, she’s lost four in a row coming to Nottingham.

The German was last in action at the end of May, where she lost in the first round of a helter-skelter match against Daria Kasatkina in straight sets.

Of relevance, Niemeier is defending quarterfinal points at Wimbledon next month, so she needs to wrestle some control and attract momentum in the lead-up to the second Grand Slam of the season.

How she would be able to do that is to win tennis matches again. For starters, she was due to defend the 125K title in Makarska last week but elected not to play in it due to the short window between clay and grass.

So Niemeier is putting all her eggs in one basket by the looks of things, and there is a possibility she could fall outside the top 100 if this slump doesn’t come to a halt at the end of Wimbledon.

Watson Eases Into the Main Draw

There was no wild card forthcoming for Heather Watson in Nottingham, so the former British No. 1 needed to go through qualifying at the weekend to book her berth in the main draw.

Watson was comfortably heads and shoulder above both Sophie Chang and compatriot Amelia Rajecki dropping a grand total of 11 games in two matches.

With her ranking inching closer to outside the top 200, Watson has found opportunities of playing top-level tennis severely limited playing five matches in total since the start of the year.

As a result, she has featured mostly on the ITF circuit where she has an 11-5 record for the season and has reached two finals.

Watson’s record in Nottingham doesn’t inspire too much confidence. She hasn’t scaled the second round stage in the event in six visits.

Niemeier v Watson Prediction and Tip

It’s all or nothing for Niemeier during the grass-court season after a terrible first half of the season. Her ground game suits grass and we should expect a reaction here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Niemeier to win: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Niemeier to win in straight sets: 6/4
