Magdalena Frech will play a Brit in the first round of the Nottingham Open for the second year in a row. And that doesn’t look like a good omen for the World No. 88.
Last year, Frech was stunned by Yuriko Miyazaki in straight sets, and chances of an upset against Sonay Kartal are brewing considering the World No. 277’s outstanding qualifying campaign.
Frech was the first player to win a main draw match at this year’s French Open when she defeated Shuai Zhang in under an hour on Day 1, but was routinely knocked out by Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round.
The Pole has a negative win-loss record in 2023, winning five of her 11 matches on tour. Her best result for the season came at the WTA 125K tournament in Paris, where she reached the quarterfinals.
Let’s see if Frech will avoid an upset against a home crowd favorite on Day 1.

Sonay Kartal entered last year’s main draw in Nottingham as a wild card, giving a good account of herself in her opener where she lost Camila Giorgi.
This year, she’s fought her way into the main draw, beating former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse in back-to-back matches and without dropping a set.
Kartal’s strong qualifying campaign should give her belief that the wait for a maiden Tour-level win is nearly over.
It’s been such a short space of time for Kartal to master grass-court tennis. It was only last year when she played her first match on the professional scene on the lawns, and she now has a 7-5 lifetime record.
Kartal has won seven ITF titles in her young career, with the 21-year-old accounting for the W25 Santa Margherita Di Pula ITF title in early April. Can she pull off her first win on the WTA Tour on Monday?

We could very well see our first upset here as Kartal, who was superb in qualifying, is seeking a maiden WTA main draw win. If she can continue her dominance on serve and dictates with her consistent forehand, we like her chances here against an opponent who has performed tamely in main draws this season.
