Bonaventure Coming off Bleak Results

Things have not gone according to the plan for Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure of late. Her clay swing was incredibly uneventful; she walked away with a record of 3-5, with all victories coming in qualifiers/Challenger tournaments.

The current World No. 92 lost her opening-round matches in the French Open, WTA Rabat, and the Italian Open to lower-ranked players like Taylor Townsend, Julia Grabher, and Anna Blinkova.

In Saint-Malo WTA 125, she did go as far as round two before losing to Elina Svitolina.

Ysaline’s performance on hard courts was comparatively better; at the start of the season, she was a semifinalist in the ASB Classic (as a qualifier) and later featured in the quarterfinal in Monterrey.

As for her form on grass, there have been only two seasons where saw some rhythm – 2019 (8-3) and 2018 (5-3).

Zhao Clears the Qualifiers

Taking the long way to the main draw in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Carol Zhao of Canada defeated Lexie Stevens and Kristina Dmitruk in straight sets in the qualifiers.

Now ranked World No. 163, the 27-year-old is now 12-15. Last week, she competed in the ITF Surbiton but fell in the first round to Katie Swan. Nonetheless, she must have benefited a little bit from the grass play.

That result was preceded by a litany of early exits in Challenger and WTA events on clay courts – notably WTA Bogota, French Open, and Clarins Challenger. Zhao did feature in the semifinal at ITF Fukuoka, where she fell to Natsumi Kawaguchi. That was also her best result of the season.

Carol’s experience on grass is far less than Ysaline’s overall; her career record on the surface stands at 2-4.

Bonaventure v Zhao Prediction and Tip

Bonaventure looks favourite to win this one; it may not be a comfortable win, but she should nevertheless ride the way into round two.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Ysaline to win: 10/11
  • Low-Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 5/6
