Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will begin her 2023 grass court season in Berlin on Monday.

The world no. 9 did not play a lot of tennis on clay, but she was in fantastic form on hard courts, winning the Miami Open title to claim her 9th WTA 1000 title.

Following the Miami win, the 30-time tour-level champion broke back into the top 10 for the first time since September 2021.

Currently ranked no. 9th in the world, the former world no. 2, will look to make a good start on grass, where she has a 5-1 record in finals.

She will be playing in Berlin for the first time though. The Czech left-hander brings a 17-7 season record into the tournament, where she is the seventh seed.

She lost both her clay court matches in Madrid and at Roland Garros but was 17-5 on hard courts. In addition to winning the Miami title she was a quarterfinalist at Indian Wells and Adelaide-2. How is she going to fare on grass?

Last year, she had a 7-2 run on grass, winning the title in Eastbourne. Can she get off to a winning start in Berlin?

Pliskova Was a Quarterfinalist in Berlin Last Year

Facing Kvitova will be former world no. 1 Karolina Pliskova.

Ranked no. 18th in the world, Pliskova is also a fantastic grass court player and was a runner-up at Wimbledon two years ago.

Pliskova has been in decent form this year as well and brings an 18-10 season record into the tournament. She was 16-7 on hard courts and 2-3 on clay.

The highlight of her season so far has been a run to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. She also made it to the last eight in Dubai and Stuttgart but has not reached the final four stage yet.

The 31-year-old has 16 titles from 32 finals and she is 3-3 on grass.

This will be Pliskova’s third appearance in Berlin. She went out in the round of 16 in 2021 and in the quarterfinals last year. How far can she go this year?

Kvitova v Pliskova Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a cracking contest between the two Czech players. Kvitova has been the more consistent this year and also has a better record on grass and therefore she will hold a slight edge in this battle, however given Pliskova’s quality, Kvitova would be prepared for a long affair.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kvitova to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
