After a rollicking start to his career, Alcaraz has climbed up to the number one in the ATP Rankings already and was a pre-tournament favourite going into the French Open. He made the semifinal as expected but then cramped up quite badly in his match against Novak Djokovic before falling in four sets.
Alcaraz was happy to admit he overly stressed out playing the 23-time Grand Slam champion and that’s something he will look to work on.
The question now is whether he would be able to do that and up his game on grass too, a surface he has not had the best record on.
Last year, for instance, he featured in a couple of exhibition matches on grass and lost them both before making the fourth round at Wimbledon. Alcaraz was sent packing by Jannik Sinner in that match.
Those three wins form three of the four career victories Alcaraz has on grass so far. He will surely want to quickly notch up a few more this season including this one against Fils.

He has already hit a career-high ranking of 62 and that form has translated into Fils managing to qualify for the first two grass tournaments of his career.
At Rosmalen last week, Fils had defeated Lloyd Harris and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the qualifying rounds to make the first round where he lost to Adrian Mannarino. Mannarino would later go on to defeat Daniil Medvedev as well.
For Queen’s, Fils has had to come through the qualifiers again.
This time around he has overcome Hugo Grenier and then edged out Alexei Popyrin in three gruelling sets to set up this first round meeting with Alcaraz.
While Fils has never won a main draw match on grass and might not start winning here given the luck of this draw, he has done enough to show he can put up a show.

Expect Fils to put up a fight despite what the odds reckon. Alcaraz to still come through in two fighting sets or even see a third.
