World no. 53 Yannick Hanfmann will be playing the first match of the season on grass on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old German, who plays his best tennis on clay, has a 2-4 record on grass at the tour level. The two wins came in Stuttgart in 2017 and in 2021. Last year, he played in the qualifying rounds in Stuttgart, Halle and Wimbledon but failed to make the main draw of any of the tournaments.

This will be Hanfmann’s second appearance in Halle. In 2021, he had made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, but went down in the opening match to Arthur Rinderknech.

Hanfmann has been playing well this season. The two-time ATP finalist reached his maiden ATP 1000 final at the Rome Masters. The German also defeated two top 10 players in Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev en route the last eight finish in Rome.

The German is 13-8 on the tour and 31-15 across levels this year. In addition to the Rome quarterfinal, he was a semifinalist in Houston and also a quarterfinalist in Santiago.

World no. 347 Louis Wessels made it to the main draw of a tour level event for the first time this year, when he defeated fellow German Henri Squire. in three sets in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Wessels served 16 aces, saved 6 of 7 break points and converted 2 of 10 to beat Squire 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and seven minutes. He had beaten China’s Zhang Zhizhen 6-4, 6-2 in the first qualifying round.

The 24-year-old, who made his ATP main draw debut in 2016 at the German Cup, has a 1-1 career record on the tour.

Like Hanfmann, he too, plays his best tennis on clay. This year, he has a 14-19 record at the lower level tournaments.
