Tiafoe Makes a Brisk Start

After winning the Stuttgart Open title on Sunday and breaking into the top 10 for the first time in his career, world no. 10 Frances Tiafoe continued his unbeaten run on grass as he won his opening round match in Queen’s on Tuesday.

Tiafoe needed just 68 minutes to beat the Netherlands’ Botic Van de Zandschulp 6-2, 6-4. He was not broken by the Dutchman in the match as he saved all three of the break points he faced. In contrast, he had nine chances to break his opponent and he capitalised on three of those opportunities.

Tiafoe, who beat Jan-Lennard Struff in the Stuttgart final on Sunday, improved to 5-0 on grass this season.

It is turning out to be a fantastic year for Tiafoe, who also won the Houston Open title this year and was a semifinalist in Indian Wells.

Overall he has a 28-9 record this season and will be looking to improve that record further on Wednesday. If Tiafoe wins against Korda, he will reach the quarterfinal in Queen’s for the third time, having also reached that stage in 2018 and 2021. He is yet to reach the semifinals though.

Korda Knocks Out Evans

World no. 32 Sebastian Korda won his first round match against Dan Evans on Monday, beating the Briton in straight sets to open his grass court season with a victory.

Korda did not face a single break point in the match, while he converted half of the four break points that he held to register a 6-4, 7-5 win in an hour and 30 minutes.

The American struck 13 aces and 27 winners in the match and won 80% of his service points to dump out the world no. 25.

With the win, Korda improved his season record to 10-5. He made a brilliant start to the season, finishing runner-up in Adelaide and reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, but a wrist injury sidelined him for over three months. The 22-year-old returned on clay, but he had a disappointing 1-3 run on the surface.

Having started off well on grass, he will be looking to build on the start. He is a decent grass court player and was in the round of 16 in his only Wimbledon appearance in 2021.

Tiafoe v Korda Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a close contest. Tiafoe is the favourite though as he is in terrific form at the moment. Expect him to edge past the fellow American.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tiafoe to win: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 5/6
