Simona Halep v Taylor Townsend Head to Head
Halep and Townsend have met only twice on the WTA Tour. Their most recent meeting took place in the 2018 Roland Garros, where the Romanian prevailed in straight sets. She currently leads Townsend with a 2-0 tally.
Halep in Contention for No. 1 Ranking Again
Following Naomi Osaka’s early defeat in the Indian Wells earlier this month, Simona Halep, along with a few other players, is in contention for the No. 1 spot again. In order to do this, she needs to reach the final and her path starts with Townsend.
It has been a couple of interesting weeks for the Romanian. She started the season without a coach and reached as far as the fourth round in the Australian Open. Then, she appointed Thierry Van Cleemput before WTA Doha and made it to the final there, Elise Mertens. This defeat was followed by Halep parting ways with Cleemput, just after a week.
Then, the reigning Canadian Open champion played in Dubai and Indian Wells without a coach and the end result was respective defeats in the quarterfinal and the fourth round.
Now, Daniel Dobre has joined her team as her new coach. The duo have worked together previously and Halep feels confident working with Dobre. Being a new partnership, it will be put to test in Miami.
Townsend Registers her First Win on the WTA Tour
Townsend started her run in Miami as a qualifier and made it to the main draw after a couple of impressive wins. In the first round, she edged past the Swede Johanna Larsson in straight sets to set up the Halep encounter.
This is the first time this year that Townsend has achieved a feat like that. Barring her performances in the 125K Series events in Indian Wells and Newport Beach where she reached the third round and beyond, the American failed to win her opening games.
She lost her first-round fixtures in Auckland and the Australian Open.
Halep v Townsend Predictions & Tips
Halep will start as the favourite here. With a 2-0 lead over Townsend and a superior form of late, she should be able to win this one comfortably.
