Sakkari Routs Sasnovich

Maria Sakkari cruised past Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2 6-1 in 66 minutes. It’s the fewest games Sakkari has lost in a match this season and she will contest a second successive quarterfinal in Berlin.

The Greek had gotten her revenge over Alize Cornet in her opener (the woman who defeated her in Nottingham last week) and played some close-to-perfect tennis to tame Sasnovich.

Sakkari made a quick start, taking a 3-0 lead with an early break, and she saved two break back points to extend her lead, first at 3-1, and then at 4-2. Once she held, for a 5-2 lead, Sasnovich was under pressure in the eighth game in which she was broken to cede the set.

Sakkari maintain her level throughout and played an even better second set. She got two breaks of serve, intermittently, at the start and the very end to close out the win.

Overall, she hammered seven aces and won 78% first-serve points. She also saved all four break points she faced in the match. Sakkari will play to return to the semifinal in Berlin for the second year in a row.

Vondrousova Excellent Again As Opponent Retires

Marketa Vondrousova kept up her unbeaten start to this year’s grass swing. She led 6-3 6-5 when her opponent Jule Niemeier retired with a painful wrist injury.

Vondrousova had earned a hard-fought win over Bianca Andreescu on Wednesday, needing four match points to get over the finish line. But she was in sublime form against the home favorite who upset defending champion Ons Jabeur in the first round.

And after an error-strewn third game in the first set by Niemeier, Vondrousova broke to 15, and quickly extended her lead to 4-2. She had six more break points in a long seventh game, but Niemeier held.

That did not deter Vondorusova’s confidence as the Czech broke again at the tail end of the set to win 6-3.

The second set was extremely tight as the German big hitter matched Vondrousova’s intensity with her heavy ground strokes.

But Niemeier suffered a nasty injury after falling and landing on her wrist. Despite taking a medical timeout at 6-5, she realized she couldn’t serve for the 12th game, giving Vondorusova passage into the last eight.

Sakkari v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova combines power and finesse to good effect. It’s not a big surprise to see her coming in as the clear-cut favorite after an unbeaten start to this year’s grass swing. We reckon the Czech will pierce through the athletic Greek’s defense.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Vondrousova to win: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
