World no. 9 Jannik Sinner put up a gritty performance in the second round in Halle to knock out world no. 39 Lorenzo Sonego in a two hour and 54 minute contest.

The fourth seed Sinner lost the first set in a tiebreak, but he fought back over the next two sets, getting a break in each of the sets to win the match 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4.

Sinner was not broken in the match, as he saved all eight of them. In contrast, he had 11 chances to break his compatriot and he capitalised on two of those opportunities.

Sinner had also needed three sets to win his opening round match against Richard Gasquet, beating the Frenchman 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in two hours and 30 minutes. The 21-year-old will be looking to reach his sixth semifinal of the year. The seven-time tour-level champion had won the title in Montpellier and finished runner-up in Rotterdam and Miami. He was also a semifinalist in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo.

If he wins on Friday, the 2022 Wimbledon quarterfinalist will reach his maiden tour-level semifinal on grass.

Bublik Battles Past Struff

After taking down the seventh seed Borna Coric in straight sets in the first round, Alexander Bublik defeated another higher ranked player in world no. 33 Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday.

While the first round match had lasted just 69 minutes, Bublik needed two hours and 16 minutes to edge out the German 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.

Bublik served 23 aces and struck 43 winners in the match. He won 84% points on his first delivery and converted 4 of 14 break points to take down last week’s Stuttgart finalist.

The world no. 48 Bublik has struggled this season and the two wins in Halle improved his season record to 10-19 on the tour this year. The 26-year-old has been a good performer on grass and he will give the world no. 9 a run for his money.
