Krejcikova in Form

World No. 10 Barbora Krejcikova is coming off a great run, having bagged her first WTA singles final on grass turf.

Competing in Birmingham last week, the veteran Czech emerged as the runner-up after moving past the likes of Tereza Martincova, Linda Fruhvirtova, and Lin Zhu. She ultimately lost to Jelena Ostapenko.

That puts her record at 24-12 for the season. Earlier in the season, Barbora also won the WTA Dubai title, where she dismissed a handful of big names like Daria Kasatkina, Jessica Pegula, Petra Kvitova, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek. In addition, she made it to the round of 16 in Madrid, Miami, and Indian Wells.

On the doubles tour, Krejcikova is ranked #2 – courtesy of recent titles from Birmingham, Indian Wells, and the Australian Open.

On lawn tennis courts, at least on the doubles circuit, the 27-year-old has three titles – including two from Wimbledon.

Wang Clears Qualifiers

22-year-old Xiyu Wang made it to the main draw in Eastbourne after clearing the prelims. Lucky has also blessed her to some extent – she got a mid-match walkover against Dalma Galfi and later defeated Linda Fruhvirtova 6-4, 6-2.

It was a similar story for the Chinese player in Birmingham last week; she prevailed in the qualifiers but lost the opener to Rebecca Marino. Even in Nottingham, she lost the opener to Maria Sakkari.

Wang’s record for the season is 12-13 and her best results have come on clay courts in the form of a round-of-16 showing in Rome and a third-round appearance in Madrid.

Xiyu enjoyed a good spell in 2022, closing at 41-25 but in 2023, she seems to have lost some of that momentum. As a result, she has slipped to the 73rd spot in the ranking.
