There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Sakkari has won them both. Both matches came in hardcourt competitions.

Sakkari 4-2 on Grass This Season

Sakkari’s overall record on grass has been quite a decent one and even this year she has not been too off the mark in that respect.

I mean sure, Sakkari did fall in the second round of the Nottingham Open, losing to Alize Cornet who was a whopping 2/1 coming into the encounter but she turned things around in Berlin.

For starters, the Greek number one avenged that defeat by easing past Cornet in the first round of the Berlin Open and followed it up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Marketa Vondrousova isn’t the easiest of opponents but a straight-set win over her took Sakkari to the semifinal.

While she lost to Donna Vekic at that stage, Sakkari looked to have done enough to fine-tune her grass court game leading into Wimbledon.

She had made the third round in this tournament last season, which is also her career-best showing here. Sakkari will hope to turn that around by entering the second week this time around.

Kostyuk on a Three-Match Losing Run

Kostyuk, who has made the second round of this competition on her previous two appearances, will enter this year’s Wimbledon on the back of three successive defeats. This is despite Kostyuk having lifted her maiden WTA tournament trophy earlier this season.

That came in Austin in the first week of March following which Kostyuk’s form has shown a dip.

In the 10 matches she has played since that title victory, Kostyuk has won just three and lost the remaining seven. Three of these defeats have come in a row before the start of Wimbledon including one at the Birmingham Open where Kostyuk was beaten in the first round by Anastasia Potapova.

What this also means is Kostyuk enters Wimbledon 2023 without too much grass court practice – just that one match – and coming up against a player of the calibre of Sakkari, that might not be enough.

Sakkari v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Sakkari looks to be in reasonable enough form to avoid an upset here. In fact, I expect her to move through to the next stage in two sets.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Sakkari to win in straight sets: 1/1
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
