Dimitrov Qualifies to Make Queen’s Quarters

While it cannot be termed as an unforgettable season for Dimitrov, he sure has managed a few good results. These, in turn, have ensured that he continues to hover in the top-30 of the ATP rankings when it could have been easy to slip away into the wilderness.

A final on the clay court of Geneva Open has been his best showing this year and Dimitrov followed that up with a fourth round appearance at the French Open – solid performances on a surface he doesn’t quite enjoy playing.

Coming into the grass swing, Dimitrov opted to take the qualifying route at the Queen’s competition last week and did well too. A couple of straight-set wins pushed him into the main draw before he defeated Emila Ruusuvuori and Francisco Cerundolo in the first couple of rounds.

And while Dimitrov lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the end, these five matches would have acted as an excellent tune-up for Wimbledon. Can he now carve out a good couple of results here too?

Shimabukuro in the Form of His Life

While he is 25 years old, it has taken Shimabukuro only now to find his feet at the highest level. May be not the highest level because while he has had a season to remember a lot of his success has come on the Challenger circuit.

Last year, Shimabukuro had pocketed a couple of Futures titles and he has gone one step further this season with two Challenger tournament wins under his belt.

What’s made this even more special is his performance on grass, a surface he has never played on before this. He featured at the Nottingham Challenger and made the quarterfinal there, and then qualified as a lucky loser at the Ilkley Challenger where he again made the last eight.

And here at Wimbledon, Shimabukuro was forced to go through the qualifiers but he did that well. In the first two rounds he came back from a set down to usurp his opponents before stunning the experienced Denis Kudla in straight sets to enter the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Can he pack a punch against Dimitrov too?
