Tomas Martin Etcheverry and compatriot Francisco Cerundolo continue to raise the bar in Argentine tennis. The pair have each forged a barnstorming season on the ATP Tour.

For the case of Etcheverry, his first full season at Tour level has seen him rise 50 places in the rankings to become a top-30 player.

The 23-year-old has reached three finals this year, two on the main tour, where he was denied ultimate glory in Santiago and Houston – both on red clay.

But those near misses only served to skyrocket Etcheverry’s confidence that he too belongs amongst the elite band of clay-court players.

Etcheverry played in his second main draw at Roland Garros and reached his first quarterfinal at grand slam level without the loss of a set, before his four-set loss to Alexander Zverev.

Now attention turns to grass for the man from La Plata. Etcheverry warmed up for Wimbledon at Eastbourne this past week where he was beaten in the first round by USA’s J.J. Wolf 6-2 6-4.

Zapata Miralles Seeks Main Draw Win on Grass

Zapata Miralles, like Etcheverry, is winless in main draw matches in grass-court events. He has a lifetime record 7-7 on grass, with all seven wins coming in qualifying draws.

Zapata Miralles qualified for Wimbledon in each of the last two seasons, accounting for six qualifying wins in that regard.

Outside the French Open, his solitary main draw win at grand slam level was at the 2021 US Open where he entered the tournament as a lucky loser and defeated compatriot Feliciano Lopez in five sets.

The 26-year-old attained a career-high ranking of No. 37 in May, which would eventually grant him a seeding spot for Roland Garros following a spate of absentees in the top 32.

But Zapata Miralles couldn’t emulate his run to the fourth round from last year, and has since cascaded down to 50th spot in the rankings. Worryingly for the Spaniard, he has lost his last four matches coming to the Championships.
