Cornet Made Nottingham Semifinal

Last year, Cornet reached the fourth round of Wimbledon for the second time, having previously managed the feat back in 2014.

The only time that the Frenchwoman had been further in a Grand Slam was at the Australian Open, also in 2022, when she was a beaten quarter-finalist.

She also capped what was a successful season for her by reaching the final in Tunisia, before losing to Elise Mertens.

Hibino Qualifies as a Lucky Loser

Hibino was not originally meant to take part in the main draw, having been beaten in the third round of qualifying. But when Danka Kovinic of Montenegro, Cornet’s scheduled opponent, had to withdraw because of injury, Hibino took her place as a Lucky Loser.

The Japanese has been coming to Wimbledon since 2015, but has never been further than the second round here, although that does match the best she has managed in any Grand Slam in her career.

Not that there has been much in her form leading up to the tournament to suggest an improvement might be on the cards this time.

In her one warm-up event on the ITF tour in Ilkley, she beat two lowly ranked opponents before she was well beaten by the American Emma Navarro in the last eight.

Storm Hunter of Australia beat her in the final round of Wimbledon qualifying, before she earned her reprieve.

Cornet v Hibino Prediction and Tip

Cornet starts the clear favourite, because of her superior record in this tournament and in Grand Slams generally, and because she is the better grass court player.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cornet to win: 3/8
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 20/23
