Cerundolo Coming Off Stunning Grass Court Title Win

Cerundolo has come into his own over the last couple of seasons thanks to his performances on clay and that’s where most of his best results have come.

This isn’t to say he hasn’t shown some sparkle in hardcourt competitions too. More so this season where Cerundolo made the quarterfinal of the Miami Masters.

Miami, however, isn’t one of the quickest hardcourt surfaces. Which is why not too many would have expected him to come good on grass and not that Cerundolo had given anyone any signs either.

At the Eastbourne International in the lead-up to this year’s Wimbledon, Cerundolo coasted into the final on the back of wins over Marc-Andrea Huesler, Zhizhen Zhang and Mackenzie McDonald. And then in the title-decider, Cerundolo upset the 4/6 favourite Tommy Paul in three sets to double his ATP title count.

Not too many had doubted his talent, just that not too many expected his second title would come on grass.

It also makes him one to watch out in the first week at Wimbledon this season.

Borges Yet to Win Main Draw Match on Grass

He has done reasonably well on the Challenger circuit for grass court competitions but at the highest level, Borges comes into this year’s Wimbledon without a win under his belt.

Borges did make it to the semifinal at the Nottingham Challenger this season but has fallen to three successive defeats following that.

The Portuguese player went down to Andy Murray in that last four appearance before Thiago Tirante shocked him at the Ilkley Challenger opener. Turning his attention to the Eastbourne International, Borges had started off a favourite against Sebastian Baez but a 6-3, 6-4 loss at his hands would make him wonder.

Wonder if he can make things work his way at this year’s Wimbledon where he starts off with someone who might have been formerly called a clay-court specialist but comes into this tournament with a lot more than just clay court victories.

Cerundolo v Borges Prediction and Tip

  • Low Risk Tip: Cerundolo to win: 3/10
