John Isner v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head

The two have met twice before, on the Spaniard’s favourite surface of clay. Isner won their first meeting in the Rome Masters in 2017, Ramos-Vinolas getting his revenge in the same tournament a year later. They have never met on a hard court before.

Can Isner Continue his Title Defence?

Isner is harbouring hopes of back-to-back titles in Miami, and got his defence underway by beating the qualifier Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in the second round on Friday. It was the best possible start, in terms of an opponent he could have afforded and now that it’s out of his way, the more difficult times begin.

Like all the big servers here he would have liked the courts to be a little faster, but his game is suited to this surface far more than his opponent on Sunday.

He has had a couple of decent outings this season so far, with semi-finals at New York, Delray Beach and Acapulco, but has been found wanting in the bigger tournaments – a first round exit at the Australian Open and a fourth round ouster at Indian Wells.

Underdog Ramos-Vinolas More a Clay Court Specialist

Ramos-Vinolas is primarily a counter-puncher whose game is better suited to clay where he can wear his opponents down, rather than a hard court event like Miami. It is no surprise that his solitary senior ATP win, and four of his five losing finals have come on clay.

However, he has got two wins under his belt already in this tournament, having beat Marius Copil of Romania in the first round, and then Lucas Pouille of France on Friday. Having had a win-loss record of 8-8 going into this tournament, he would be in a better space to have won two matches in a row, going into this meeting with Isner.

Isner v Ramos-Vinolas Predictions & Tips

Isner will start odds-on favourite for the match at 3/11, whilst you can get 7/2 on Ramos-Vinolas. This match appears tailor-made for the big serving American to impose himself and continue his defence of the title. However, seeds have been tumbling in Miami, so Isner will need to take care he is not the latest to make an early exit.

Tip: Isner to win in three sets: 10/3 (bet365)
