Rybakina Slow off the Blocks against Rogers

Rybakina hasn’t had the best start to her title defence this year as she struggled to make things count at the Berlin Open earlier and in the first round here was taken to three sets by Shelby Rogers.

Now Rogers isn’t the easiest of opponents, sure, but as a world number three and a defending champion one would have expected Rybakina to ease through to the second round.

Instead a loss of serve in the very first game of the match kick-started a bit of a surprising chain of events against Rybakina. The Kazakh failed to break back in the entire set and was staring at a shock defeat when she was soon a set down.

Not for long though.

Rybakina’s comeback came early in the second set as she broke Rogers twice in a row to take a 5-0 lead. She went ahead to take a 2-0 lead in the third and pushed on the pressure in the seventh game, breaking Rogers for the fourth time in the match to end the resistance.

She will hope to do a lot better come the second round.

Cornet Sends Hibino Packing

It did not take Cornet too much time to get going and ending Nao Hibino’s Wimbledon 2023 party.

In a match that lasted a mere hour and six minutes, Cornet won 6-2, 6-2 against a player who was coming in as a lucky loser following her qualifier defeat at the hands of Storm Hunter. She did not hold too much of a chance against her aggressive French opponent, who broke her a whopping five times out of the five chances she got.

Hibino pulled one back but by then Cornet had already scooped up the first set and was 4-0 up in the second.

This follows a reasonable run on grass this season for Cornet, who had also made the semifinal at the Nottingham Open. Can she put up some sort of a fight against the world number three and the defending champion?

Rybakina v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Rybakina might not have had a solid opening outing but she seemed to be growing into the encounter and we can expect her to come through in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Rybakina to win in straight sets: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
