Medvedev Knocks Out Fery

Daniil Medvedev has never lost a first round match at Wimbledon and the world no. 3 kept that record intact as he moved into the second round of this year’s competition with a straight sets win over British wild card Arthur Fery.

Medvedev was given a tough fight by the world no. 391 in the first two sets, but he looked in complete control of the final set as he recorded a 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 victory in just over two hours. He struck 45 winners in the match, saved two of four break points and converted 6 f 12 to reach round 2.

The Russian had produced his best Wimbledon result last year, when he reached the round of 16. This year he has  improved his grass court record to 3-2 in 2023 and that is largely due to his performance in Halle, where he was a quarterfinalist.

Medvedev has been in tremendous form this season, winning five titles from six finals and improving his season numbers to 42-8.

He has a pretty good record on grass, and will be desperate to reach his first quarterfinal at SW19 this year. But first he will focus his attention on the second round encounter.

Mannarino has been in fine form on grass this season and Wednesday’s win improved his season record to 8-3 on the surface. The world no. 35 was a finalist in Mallorca last week, when he finished runner-up to Christopher Eubanks. Additionally he was also a quarterfinalist in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Queen’s.

Overall, he has a 22-20 record this season and thanks to the win over Shevchenko, he is now 15-11 at the Championships. He has been to the fourth round on three occasions. Can he  go that far once again?

Medvedev v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a tricky contest for Medvedev. He has an inferior head-to-head record against Mannarino, lost their only meeting this year and also has lost three of their four matchups on grass. But given the Russian’s quality and the way he has flourished this year, Medvedev is expected to edge through.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Medvedev to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 38.5 games in the match: 5/6
