Zverev Plays At Long Last

Alexander Zverev’s opening match of this year’s Championships started much later than originally scheduled due to inclement weather in the first three days.

Zverev and Gijs Brouwer had to wait until Thursday lunchtime to play when some of their peers had already qualified for the third round.

In a battle between two serving behemoths, it was Zverev who edged the Dutchman, in the tightest of straight sets matches we will see at the Championships – 6-4 7-6 7-6 in two hours and 15 minutes.

Zverev is conversant with the task at hand. He’ll play on Friday and possibly on Saturday as the tournament works out a makeshift schedule to accommodate the first three rounds and complete them by Saturday.

For Zverev, getting through in straight sets helps him to conserve a bit of energy for much sterner tests ahead. He missed last year’s Wimbledon on the back of a gruesome ankle injury he suffered at the French Open, but the German couldn’t hide his delight to be back at SW19.

Watanuki Authors Astonishing Comeback

Yosuke Watanuki played his first-round match on Wednesday, against Swiss lefty Marc-Andrea Huesler. The pair completed their match on Thursday afternoon after play was suspended due to darkness last evening.

Watanuki, who only got into the main draw as a lucky loser (lost to Denis Novak in qualifying), earned just the second Grand Slam main draw win of his career.

His first also came this season at the Australian Open in January when he defeated Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets.

But beating Huesler in an incredible five-set marathon will live long in his memory bank. On Wednesday, he trailed Huesler by two sets to love, although he was a break up in the third set when play was halted.

On resumption, Watanuki lost his momentum a bit and saw his big lead wiped away and the set went into a tiebreak. Luckily for Watanuki, Huesler produced an error too many to lose it. That was the opening Watanuki needed and he pinched another tiebreak in the fourth set to bring the match on level terms.

And for only the second time in the match, Watanuki broke Huesler at the start of the fifth set. He would not relinquish his lead en route to victory.

Zverev v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Alexander Zverev was itching to get onto the court judging by how imperious he looked in his opening match. Watanuki’s comeback win was simply extraordinary, but the lucky loser will run out of lives here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Zverev to win: 1/8
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Zverev to win in straight sets: 10/11
