Last year’s quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier got her 2023 Wimbledon campaign off to an excellent start as the German stunned French Open finalist Karolina Muchova in a three-set opening round contest.
Niemeier did not face a single break point in the first set, while she held 13 of them. While Muchova saved 12 of them, the German converted one, which proved to be decisive in the opening set.
The world no. 16 Muchova started the second set well by breaking Niemeier in the very first game, but the German pulled the break back in the 10th game. However, the 16th seed broke back immediately and then held serve to tie the match at one-set all. But Muchova’s joy was short-lived as Niemeier dominated the third set to claim the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
This is the second top 20 player that Niemeier has beaten on grass this year. Earlier she had stunned world no. 6 Ons Jabeur in the first round in Berlin.
Ranked no. 103, Niemeier had reached the last eight stage at Wimbledon on her debut last year. She has had a torrid time this year though and is 11-18 across levels. But she will be happy with the start at Wimbledon and will look to keep the momentum going.

Galfi Rallies Past Noskova
Hungary’s Dalma Galfi rebounded from a set down to beat the Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova in the opening round.
The world no. 126 was edged by the world no. 45 in the first set tiebreak, but she fought back in the second set by getting the solitary break of the set and then dominated the third set by breaking Noskova twice and winning the match 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2.
This is the second straight year Galfi is in the round of 64 at Wimbledon. The Hungarian has done well on grass at lower level tournaments. She won the Ilkley ITF last year and was a semifinalist in the same tournament this year.
Overall, Galfi is 16-21 across levels this year, with her best being a quarterfinal finish in Linz.
