Bencic Needs Third Set Tie-Break to Advance

There could scarcely be a greater contrast between Bencic’s two matches at Wimbledon so far.

Her first round win over the British wildcard Katie Swan was completely routine, and the Swiss number one was barely tested.

However, her second round opponent, Danielle Collins, the world number 52, was made of sterner stuff and pushed her all the way.

In fact, it was the American who started the better, recovering from dropping her serve in the opening game of the match with two successive breaks of her own, which enabled her to take the first set,

The second set was a reverse of the first, beginning with Bencic dropping her serve, but responding by breaking the American twice to level up the match.

Although Bencic earned herself four break points in the course of the third set she could not convert any of them, and the outcome of the match was decided by a tie-break.

Finally Bencic was able to assert herself, being faultless on serve herself, whilst breaking Collins four times.

She go there in the end, but it was a lot closer than she would have liked.

Linette Pushed by Czech Veteran

Linette has made the third round of this championship for the third time in her career, but, like Bencic, having begun with an easy win, she had to work a lot harder in her second round match.

She had beaten Jil Teichmann, Bencic’s compatriot, in straight sets, and then faced the Czech veteran Barbora Strycova, now ranked 623rd in the world, and only playing in this tournament because of her Protected Ranking.

The first set saw the pair swap breaks twice, before Linette earned it with yet another break.

The pair swapped breaks again at the start of the second set, and then Strycova saved five more break points.

However, she was able to keep hanging in there, and managed to get to the tie-break, during which she saved a match point, before converting a set point of her own.

But Linette regained control of the match with an early break in the third set, and wrapped up the match with another break.
