Swiatek Run Close by Bencic

Swiatek has never made it to the quarterfinal at Wimbledon before this and there were times in her fourth round match against Belinda Bencic that it looked she would have to wait another year to do so.

The world number one endured two match points against the 14th-ranked Bencic before coming through 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-3 to register her 14th successive win on tour.

In a match lasting three hours and four minutes, Swiatek squandered two set-points in the very first set at 5-4 before Bencic racked off a 4-0 lead in the tie-breaker. She would go on to win it after missing three set-points at 6-1.

The second set saw Swiatek fritter away a 3-1 advantage as Bencic broke back and then held two match-points at 15-40 on the Polish player’s serve in the 12th game. Swiatek saved both, quickly recovered from those and then clinched the tie-breaker.

And in the decider, Swiatek needed just one break of serve after having saved a break-point in the previous game to squeak through to the last eight.

Can she continue with her winning run against a player who is quickly moving up the ranks?

Svitolina Produces Thriller against Azarenka

She had never beaten Victoria Azarenka before this but in a battle lasting two hours and 46 minutes, Svitolina produced a thrilling comeback-from-behind victory to overcome her Belarusian opponent in three sets.

Svitolina won 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9) after having fallen way behind in the encounter at one stage before a stirring showing helped her clinch the win.

Having reached the quarterfinal of the French Open, Svitolina made it two such appearances in a row as she came back from a set and 2-0 down to grab the match tie-breaker.

Svitolina, who had never beaten Azaarenka in five previous meetings, then went 3-0 up in the decider but failed to keep up with that lead as Azarenka showing her mettle. A match tie-breaker followed soon after in which there wasn’t anything to choose between the players.

Azarenka raced away to a 4-2 and then a 7-4 lead only for Svitolina to win the next four points in a row. At 9-8, Svitolina missed a match-point but that didn’t cost her too much as she won the next two points to nail her place in the last eight.

Can she put up a similar showing against Swiatek?
