Sabalenka Knocks Out Keys

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka has been playing some exceptional tennis at Wimbledon and as a result the Belarusian has made it to the semifinal of the tournament for the second time in her career.

Sabalenka’s most recent win came against the United States’ Madison Keys on Wednesday, as the world no. 2 handed the American a 6-2, 6-4 drubbing in an hour and 28 minutes.

The 25-year-old broke Keys twice in the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead. Then she came back from 2-4 down in the second to reach a seventh semifinal of the season. The win improved Sabalenka to 40-7 in 2023.

She won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and made it to the semifinal at Roland Garros. Overall, Sabalenka, a 13-time tour level champion, has featured in five finals this year, winning the titles in Adelaide and Madrid in addition to the first major; while she finished runner-up in Indian Wells and Stuttgart.

Sabalenka, who was beaten by Karolina Pliskova in the semifinal in 2021, is into her sixth major semifinal. Her road to the final four included a straight sets drubbing of Panna Udvardy in the first round; a come-from-behind three-set win over Varvara Gracheva in the second round; and consecutive straight set wins over Anna Blinkova, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Keys in the third round, fourth round and the quarterfinal respectively.

Can she keep the momentum going in the semifinal?

Jabeur Gets Her Revenge Over Rybakina

Last year’s runner-up Ons Jabeur is back in the semifinal this year, after she ousted Elena Rybakina and ended the Kazakh’s hopes of defending her title.

In the 2022 final, Rybakina had come back from a set down to beat Jabeur and clinch the title. But this year, the Tunisian turned the tables on the third seed in a quarterfinal clash on Wednesday, as she rebounded after losing the first set to beat Rybakina 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1.

Jabeur saved 7 of 9 break points and converted 5 of 9 to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the third time. Last year, in addition to finishing runner-up at Wimbledon, Jabeur also finished runner-up at the U.S. Open.

It will be interesting to see if she can reach a third major final. She is 21-9 this season and won her fourth WTA title by triumphing in Charleston this year. That’s the only final she has featured in this year. While she has been inconsistent this year, she is in top form at the moment.

The 28-year-old began her Wimbledon campaign with a straight sets win over Magdalena Fręch in the first round. She then demolished Zhuoxuan Bai in the second round in straight sets. She faced some stiff resistance from Bianca Andreescu in the third round, but rallied from a set down to beat the Canadian and march ahead. In the fourth round, the world no. 6 once again dominated the proceedings, defeating Petra Kvitová in straight sets.

So overall, Jabeur has got into a great rhythm and will be looking to reach a second straight final at the grass court major.

Sabalenka v Jabeur Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka has been far more consistent than Jabeur this season; she has also dominated the rivalry, and won their last three meetings. So the second seed will be a slight favourite going into the contest.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sabalenka to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 26.5 games in the match: 5/6
