It would be an understatement to call Qinwen’s grass court campaign for the season as underwhelming. Having gotten knocked out of the competition in the second round of the French Open, Qinwen went on to lose three more matches in a row.
And all three of them came on grass which meant Qinwen ended the season on a 0-3 win-loss record on that surface.
Before that though, Qinwen had won 17 of her 26 matches this season, including a semifinal appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open and a quarterfinal showing in Rome. It’s that latter showing which will hold her in a good stead coming into this tournament on clay.
Only last season Qinwen was ranked 126th in the world before she broke into the top 20 earlier this year for the first time. She is right now 25th in the world and knows it’s a crucial portion of the season as she looks to defend some hefty amount of points in the second half of the year.

Once ranked fifth in the world, Errani is now outside the top 100 and she has stayed there for a while now despite her best efforts on clay.
The Italian did hit a season-high of 69th a little over a month ago but then came the grass swing and in the absence of the results going her way, she fell to her current ranking of 112th, which is her lowest for the season again.
Which is why a return to clay would excite Errani like no other.
She has already featured in a WTA 125 tournament in Contrexeville and made the quarterfinal there, ensuring a move up to 111th but here’s an issue with that. Her quarterfinal loss to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova saw her win just one game in the encounter.
It’s an indicator that Errani’s struggles against quality players haven’t really gone away and against Zheng, she might have the same problems.

Given the difference in the playing pedigree of these two players, Zheng starts a favourite but do we think there could be a repeat of the Pavlyuchenkova result here? Not quite. Might see Errani put up a bigger fight.
