Sherif has had a year to remember in which she has jumped up to her career-best ranking of 31st in the world. And this is despite having featured in only two grass court competitions and winning just one match there.
Her ascent on the WTA Rankings charts has been down to her performance on clay.
In fact, in the lead-up to the grass swing, Sherif featured in two WTA 125 tournaments at Makarska and Valencia and went on to win both the titles. She lost just one set across the two tournaments.
Sherif’s best performance earlier came in Madrid where she made the quarterfinals with wins over Camila Giorgi, Caroline Garcia and Elise Mertens in the process. She will start off with the confidence from having done that well all year on clay in this competition.

Having featured in the qualifiers at Wimbledon earlier this month, Maneiro finally managed to make it to the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. While she fell in the very first round of the tournament, her confidence seemed to rub off on her performances on clay as well as she featured on the ITF circuit in the following week.
Playing in Rome, she registered four straight-set wins to make the final at the tournament. At the time of writing she is still to take to court for that encounter but the fact that she is on the verge of her first ITF title of the season would augur well as she makes the main draw of this WTA tournament.
Clay is Maneiro’s most preferred surface by some distance although it must be quickly added that in 2022 she did win two ITF titles in hardcourt competitions.
That doesn’t take away from her showing on clay and with the kind of confidence she has had coming into this tournament, Maneiro could give Sherif a run for her money.

Sherif starts off an odds-on favourite, with one added advantage – Maneiro will be coming into this encounter having played five matches in five days before this. Might make it that much more difficult for Maneiro.
