Parry and Zantedeschi have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Parry Coming off Early Exit on WTA 125 Circuit

After losing to Petra Martic in a fighting second round match at Wimbledon, Parry opted to feature on the WTA 125 circuit the following week. She participated in the WTA Contrexeville, a competition played on clay.

Parry did not have a lot of trouble overcoming Kristina Mladenovic in the opener there but she fell in the second round to Fiona Ferro.

That shouldn’t bother Parry too much though given her equation with clay. All six of her career titles including five at the ITF level have come on this surface and she has also won a WTA 125 competition in Paris on clay.

That tournament win came earlier this year after Caty McNally withdrew from the final.

This will be Parry’s chance to build on that performance as she looks to return to her career-best ranking of 58th, having fallen to 82nd at the moment. She will be a huge favourite coming up against a player ranked outside the top 600.

Zantedeschi Makes it Through the Qualifiers

It took Zantedeschi two qualifying wins to make it to the main draw of a WTA event. She started off with a three-set victory over Sada Nahimana, a player who had gone into the encounter as a 1/2 favourite to clinch it and then overcame Martina Colmegna in the second.

What this means is that Zantedeschi will be playing in the main draw of a WTA event for the first time in her career, having focussed on the ITF circuit all the time before this.

In fact, this was the first WTA tournament this season in which Zantedeschi had even tried to make it through the qualifiers. And for someone ranked outside the top 600 to do it would augur well.

More so because Zantedeschi is a clay-court specialist having played nearly 200 of her 250 odd career matches on this surface.

Can she now put up a semblance of a fight here?
