Daniil Medvedev v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

The pair have met once before, back in Washington in 2017, when the Russian fought back from a set down to win after a third set tie breaker. Opelka has seen more downs than ups since but in more recent times he has become much more of a challenge for most opponents.

Medvedev, Hard Court Specialist Enjoying Miami

Medvedev finished 2018 with the most hard court wins of any player on the ATP tour, and he has begun 2019 in a similar vein. He reached the final of the Brisbane Open, and then the fourth round in Melbourne, before coming up against the eventual winner in Novak Djokovic.

He followed that up by clinching his fourth ATP career title in Sofia. Results have tailed off since then, with early losses in Rotterdam and Dubai, and a second round loss in Indian Wells but he made an encouraging start to this tournament by thrashing Adrian Mannarino of France in his first match.

He will also be aware that, with so many seeds already knocked out of this event, there is the chance to go far into the tournament here, and pick up a lot of valuable ranking points.

Opelka, American qualifier enjoying his chance

World number 59 Opelka has had to battle through qualifying to reach this stage of the competition, beating both Henri Laaksonen of Finland, and then Marcel Granollers of Spain to take his place in the main draw.

Then he beat Jan-Lennard Struff – conqueror of Alexander Zverev in Indian Wells – in the first round, and saw off the number 21 seed, Diego Schwartman, in the second. Neither of those wins have been easy – each went to three sets – but in each case Opelka managed to dig deep to win.

One of the tallest players on tour at 6 ft. 11 inches, Opelka’s big weapon is his serve.

Medvedev v Opelka Predictions & Tips

Medvedev will start the heavy odds-on favourite at 4/13, whilst Opelka is priced at 56/19. As a qualifier, Opelka has done really well to get this far, and his serve will always give him a chance on courts like Miami. However, Medvedev is a hard court specialist himself, and should have too much of an all-round game for him.

Tip: Medvedev to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
